A Big Year for Men's Health in Australia: Major Events in 2025

This year is set to be a pivotal one for men’s health in Australia, with a range of landmark events, campaigns, and initiatives focused on tackling key health challenges facing men and boys.

Lived Experience of Suicide Summit ( 13-14 March)
The Lived Experience of Suicide Summit is an opportunity for people with lived experience of suicide and others from the sector to share ideas and "explore the what next," says Bronwen Edwards, CEO of hosts Roses in the Ocean.  "It's an exciting time in Australia for people with Lived Experience and with the draft National Suicide Prevention Strategy centering lived experience as a key enabler," she says. "There are increasing opportunities for us to really shape was suicide prevention looks like in Australia going forward." 2025 marks the third Lived Experience of Suicide event from Roses in the Ocean, and it will take place in Brisbane at the Grand Chancellor Hotel.

Australian Fatherhood Symposium (1-2 May)
Celebrating 10 years, the Australian Fatherhood Research Symposium is an annual opportunity for researchers to build and consolidate collaborations with other researchers and practitioners who work with fathers. Hosted by Deakin University, AFRS features keynote presentations, networking, and snapshot summaries that showcase research and father-inclusive programs from around Australia. It can be attended in person at Deakin Downtown in Melbourne, or online via Zoom. For more information and to register, visit AFRS’s website.

National Suicide Prevention Conference (20-22 May)
Suicide Prevention Australia, the peak body for suicide prevention in Australia, runs the National Conference, uniting suicide prevention experts to showcase evidence-based solutions and robust discussion focused on saving lives. The 26th National Suicide Prevention Conference will be held in Western Australia at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre. Last year, more than 750 people attended. The theme for 2025 is Together Towards Tomorrow. Themes and workshops can be viewed on the online program, which continues to be updated. Visit the website

Men’s Health Week (9-15 June)
The Centre for Male Health chooses a different theme for Men’s Health Week each year, encouraging organisations, workplaces and communities to focus on some of the ways to keep men and boys healthier. Last year, Healthy Male and Western Sydney University launched the Good Health Heroes campaign that promoted a number of healthy habits men can consider adopting in order to increase their overall health across three key categories: Physical, mental and emotional. The National Men’s Health Gathering (22-24 October)
The 30th National Men’s Health Gathering, taking place at the Brisbane Showgrounds, will combine the National Men’s Health Conference and the 10th Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Male Health Convention. This event is a call to action for professionals, advocates, and community leaders dedicated to improving health outcomes for men and boys.

The Gathering marks three decades of progress since the inaugural event in 1995. It will bring together policymakers, health practitioners, academics, and community representatives to share ideas, build networks, and celebrate successes. With men continuing to live shorter lives than women and many preventable health issues still affecting their wellbeing, Australian Men’s Health Forum President Gillian Hunt highlighted the importance of the Gathering. “Tackling the health and social issues that men and boys face requires a whole-of-society approach, which is why this Gathering brings together policymakers, academics, health and social professions and representatives of the voluntary and community sector, with a shared commitment to improving the lives and health of men and boys.”

International Men’s Day 2025 (19 November)
International Men’s Day shines a spotlight on the positive contributions of men to their families, communities, and workplaces while raising awareness about men’s health and wellbeing. The theme for this day may vary across the world, however in Australia it is established by the peak body for men’s health, the Australian Men’s Health Forum, in consultation with the men’s health sector. The 2024 theme was ‘Men’s Health Champions’ and the 2025 theme will be announced in July. The IMD website, hosted by AMHF, provides Men’s Health Champions with resources to support activities and celebrations, as well as promoting events that are planned across Australia.
