Q: Who do you think should win this year's 2019 TAS Men's Health Award?
A: Dads Group Inc, because as a first time father I received no support from anyone and was typically treated as invisible or unwelcome by healthworkers, before and after the birth. I experienced severe prenatal depression, which gave me an insight into why some men fold under the pressure of becoming a father. More broadly, it helped me to realise that men have almost no reproductive or parental rights, and that society only values us for our ability to protect and provide, otherwise we are expendable. An initiative like Dads Group Inc is urgently needed and well overdue. While it’s good to see suicide prevention initiatives beginning to target men, male-friendly approaches to suicide prevention are still in their infancy and yet to demonstrate their effectiveness. The ‘Men With Heart Exhibition’ sounds potentially positive but is swimming against a tide of misandry and appears unlikely to have a lasting impact.
