On the Low down Corio

“ON THE LOW DOWN” IS A PREVENTATIVE MENTAL HEALTH PROGRAM EDUCATING AND CONNECTING REGIONAL VICTORIANS TO RESOURCES AND SERVICES. WE PROMOTE THE VALUE OF EMOTIONAL ACKNOWLEDGMENT AND EXPRESSION THROUGH ADDRESSING THE SOCIAL AND CULTURAL FACTORS DRIVING OUR EMOTIONS."

Australians living in regional communities demonstrate some clear statistical trends indicating that many people, and particularly men, are struggling to manage their emotions. Almost every decision we make is an emotional one, and in many cases basic social and cultural barriers including isolation and unresolved trauma prevent many of us from accessing the resources we need to successfully navigate life’s challenges.

Come along to this FREE event to meet others with common interests, get some insights and develop some tools around how to 'be there' for a mate, through being there for yourself first. This preventative mental health event is aimed at men aged 18+, and focuses on the social and cultural factors that influence wellbeing.

On the Low Down events run for two hours, including:

Part 1: Men + Emotions

  1. All people have psychological needs (1)*;

  2. What society can learn from women (3), (4);

  3. How to “be there” for a mate, and for yourself (5).

We deconstruct a number of the more notable barriers to better mental health in social, evolutionary and philosophical contexts.

Part 2: Local issues, local services:

Despite substantial overlap, each community in Victoria is unique and presents its own specific challenges to better mental health. In this section we provide a platform for local mental health providers and community group leaders to promote local and regional services to the community.

Part 3: Mental health optimisation activities:

Life can be tough enough as it is without us unnecessarily complicating our day-to day emotional experience. In this section we detail an evidence-based review of the relationship between mental health and: Sleep, Nutrition, Exercise, Getting out in nature, Being social, Maintaining an observational mindset, and How we relate to ourselves (6 - 22).
