Send A Message: Save Aussie Men

The Australian Men's Health Forum is calling on the Morrison Government to develop a national plan to tackle male suicide in Australia.

We invite you to join this campaign by writing a message of support to the Prime Minister (see right).

Over 75% of male suicides are men, but the majority of suicide prevention services the Government funds are shown to largely address female suicide risk factors.

Suicide prevention strategies in Australia don't take into account the differences between men's and women's experiences of suicide.

They don’t account for the fact that male suicides are more often linked to relationship problems, money issues, job loss and alcohol abuse.

You can help Save Aussie Men by asking the Government to do more to tackle male suicide.

Last month the National Suicide Prevention Adviser to the Prime Minister, Christine Morgan, called on the Government to fund a men's action plan aimed at preventing male suicide.

“The Government has set itself the ambitious target of working towards a zero suicide goal," said AMHF CEO, Glen Poole.

"Tackling male suicide with a targeted strategy and funding would go further than any other approach to achieving this goal."

In 2019, male suicide rose from six men and boys a day to seven. A day.

Make today count. Be like SAM.

Send your message.

    Dear Minister

The Fifth National Mental Health Plan acknowledges that approximately 75 per cent of people who die by suicide are male. 6 The failure of the Implementation Strategy to detail causes of male suicide is a missed opportunity as investments in policies and programs aimed to prevent suicide in Australia are consistently failing to target male suicide as a specific issue.

Can you please address this issue immediately, we can not loose any more fathers and sons.

    Kind regards

I have a question, Mr Prime Minister. Since suicide is overwhelmingly a male issue, why did you appoint a woman to the role of National Suicide Prevention Officer. I liken it to a man being appointed as head of the taskforce looking into male on female domestic violence.

    Mr Morrison

ABS state that 6 men suicide each day. If 6 whales beached themselves on Bondi Beach each day the nation would be in uproar and you would have to react. Obviously you have no interest in the plight of these unhappy men and do not wish to be seen supporting anti suicide programmes. 6 men each day How can you sleep at night knowing you could have acted to reduce this horrific statistic. By tomorrow another 6 men will have died.

As a Christian can you be the good samaria and help your fellow men?

    Yours faithfully

I could go into how the horrendous male suicide epidemic this country faces affects me, however that is not important! What is important is the fact that six men and boys take their lives every single day in Australia, a figure we all should be absolutely ashamed of. Scott Morrison, your were elected by the people of this country to represent all the people not just the 50% that are female, I understand you have daughters, however that in no way excuses the fact that you and your government ignored the male suicide epidemic in the last budget, you ignored the men and boys of this country and you rewarded the women of Australia with increased representation by the creation of a portfolio, and using your words calling it The Prime Minister for Women and then gave over 3 billion dollars of taxpayer funds to women, once again ignoring the men and boys you were elected to represent! Over 2000 dead men and boys every year is a disgusting price to pay for pandering to the never ending demands from women and the families of these dead men and boys deserve better from their government……There is a male suicide pandemic facing this country and it your job as our leader to address this horrendous situation!!

Dear PM – I have 3 jobs, volunteer with 2 mental health organisations, am a member of 4 mental health organisations and sit as a NSW/ACT Committee member for Suicide Prevention Australia. Why? Because I’m bereaved by the suicide of 3 men, aged 32, 38 and 41…in a 3-year period. Data shows that men are more than twice at risk of suicide than women. More funding, more awareness and more action is needed to take care of our loved ones!

    Hello

I guess having rape allowed in parliament house there’s not much hope is there

I find it hilarious that noel Lorenzo who physically and emotionally abused me when I was 19. In 1989. He was 30. Smashing glass in my face. Giving me a black eye says women get too much attention. Maybe if you stop killing women it might help things. He then preceded to marry an Indonesian woman 20 years his junior who he also abused. He is the abuser. He is 60 years old now and writes comments like this. He has no remorse for what he has done to me. There’s the problem.

My son Michael Andrew Jordon Nicol took his own life on October 2020…after we tried to get him help 2 days prior…I telephoned 4 pages of places trying to get us some help…with no luck…

10 months prior he also tried…we called the police and ambulance service many times that day…but after about 2 hours I managed to take him to the hospital myself as the police nor the ambulance showed up…after waiting there for around 8 hours wanting for Mental Health to review him…you are tied and you tell them whatever…just so you can go home…they asked him…

*do you still feel like taking your life…and of cause being tied and felt like everyone is staring at you…he says no

*do you want to go home…he says yes

*you will try and find some help…he says yes

so they send him home…no follow up…and knowing this was his 2nd attempt…

Well let me tell you it ain’t that easy to find help…I already knew that from trying to get Michael help…but it has been even harder to get help for myself since Michael’s death…let me tell you…know wonder people give up…and see suicide as their only option…very sad to hear about all this funding etc into mental health…yet suicide is seen as “they slipped through the cracks” well it best be one BIG crack…where is this so called funding going…

I grew up with two cousins, brothers they were, my uncles sons. Today, they are both no longer with us. My aunt and uncle had to bury their only two children, their sons. Both taking their lives 10 years apart. Please Mr Morrison, its time we take care of our men, theyre vital to our country and they’re suffering in silence.

women can get away with doing whatever insulting abuses they like toward us in their own way and it is time that the laws were put in place to control women to or control none of us, as freedom is meant to be for all humanity, not just women.

We have just lost a friend from suicide

A break up of relationships poorly handled DV and left broke homeless

Nothing we could do stopped him from giving up on life totally

Please lets see a change in how DV is handled and more funds put into finding solutions for the increase in mens suicide and how these issues are handled

I fully support the proposal put to you by Christine Morgan, for the Government to fund a men’s action plan aimed at preventing male suicide.

The plan must however address Aboriginal Male suicide separately.

While there are obviously similarity with respect to the social determinants, conditions and setting affecting both cohorts there are also considerable differences.

Men are definitely worth saving from the high rates of suicide. There are many men’s organisations and support groups across Australia who work behind the scenes attending to the issues that men present, I’m confident that if brought together we/they could produce some very practical methods to assist the current programs.

    Dear Scott Morrison,

    Prime Minister of Australia.

We lost our extraordinary son Ben to suicide in 2019.

He willingly paid taxes for well over 20 years to help others doing it tough, and never in his life called on the government for a handout, but the right help from your government was not there when he needed it most. This has to change for those suffering with this terrible affliction.

Ben’s psychiatrist wrote ,“Thank you very much for letting me know the outcome. Unfortunately it is what sometimes happens with chronic, unresponsive depression.

This is not good enough. You are losing a host of wonderful Australian men .

Ben like others suffering from this affliction was an outstanding human being and contributed so much to the world . He was a great athlete, footballer and swimmer. His team won an Australian Gold Medal for R & R Life Saving. His coach wrote of him ,” I knew Ben as a conscientious, dedicated young man who always gave more than you asked for. I wish he was still with us and I wish there were more like him."

His dear brother wrote of him. ……

“What was the point of Ben’s incredible suffering? He suffered more that any person I have ever known, and it was a suffering that could not be palliated. Normally we can do something to ease physical suffering or at least hasten death as we ease the pain (of those with a terminal illness).

It was not the depth of suffering but the way that Ben bore his suffering so meekly and humbly, desperately hiding it from those he most loved as he struggled to hide it from the world”.

The guilt associated with this terrible illness is incredible.

I don’t know how many times Ben apologized to dad and myself for his illness. " I’m sorry, I’m sorry , I’m so sorry Mum.‘" What other illness do you have to do this for?

He did everything in the book to be well. Doctors , exercise ,

    medication etc. etc. etc.

Ben as he grew older developed physical problems which eventually prevented him from being able to exercise.

But doctors failed to treat these adequately once they knew he suffered from depression. This illness requires that the ’whole person’ be treated in a coordinated medical approach. Just increasing the dose of anti depressants is not the answer!

I loved Ben’s quietness and gentleness and his beautiful smile and the way he kept striving and striving to hide his illness and be well for his family .

I hate the the so called experts and quacks who made so much money from his illness, but failed to help him. I hate that this is perceived as being okay. It is NOT okay and we should be much more vocal about their failures. Why is there not a register to show how many men a particular psychiatrist has lost to suicide?

What I find so hard to handle is the terrible, awful loneliness of those last few years after Ben lost his job, and the fact he felt he was a failure.

I hate that Ben, who gave so much to his family, his work , his friends, must have felt so terribly, terribly isolated

and alone when he left this world.

Ben committed suicide because he did not wish to be a burden . It must have taken tremendous courage and so much love for us all to be able to do this.

There are many men like Ben out there Mister Prime Minister. They need your help. Please help them.

    To Mr. Morrison,

I really hate the deafening noise about our Male population in Australia that are never heard about there depression and anxiety. We have a Minister for Women but we need a Minister for Men due to all Males are the forgotten breed in our nation. We need to give more focus on all Females and Males these days because we are all equal but unfortunately us Males are not equal anymore from the Feminist propaganda against us. That is why there are more male suicides these days because no one listens to our troubles in our self scented society. Please Listen!

    Thanks

    Dear Mr Morrison,

My dear brother took his own life in 2019 aged 53. Please please don’t let him be a dreadful statistic. Urgent funding and a plan is needed to tackle this great problem that is destroying lives. Please act.
