New “DILF” Dads’ Groups Enjoy Rapid Expansion

A new dads’ group set up in Terrigal in NSW last September says it has expanded to nearly 40 groups across six states in just a few months.

The DILF Club (they say it stands for “Dads I’d Like To Friend”), was set up with the aim of establishing support networks for dads with younger children.

American Psychologists Publish Guidelines For Working With Men And Boys

The American Psychological Association has developed 10 guidelines to help practitioners working with boys and men.

The guidelines cover a range of issues and encourage psychologists to deepen their awareness, knowledge and skills in key areas, including the nature of masculinity, traditional gender roles and cultural diversity.

Menslink’s research shows mentoring has lasting impact

Twelve hundred dollars is all it costs to transform a young man’s life and improve his satisfaction level on a long-term basis, according to research by Menslink.

The Canberra charity, which has been delivering support services to young men in the ACT for over 15 years, has undertaken a long-term evaluation of the impact of its work with boys and young men.

Stars back International Men's Day event

Two Aussie stars from the worlds of sport and entertainment are taking part in an International Men's Day event to be held in Beaudesert, in South East Queensland this month.

The actor and storyteller, William McInnes, will be joined by captain of the Australian Men's Hockey Team, Mark Knowles, at a free dinner hosted by the Mayor of Scenic District Council, Greg Christensen.

Doing 'Men's Work' makes blokes less likely to get help

Is work making men sick? It certainly has an impact on whether blokes get help with their mental health, according to new research based on the long-term study of Australian men.

Men who work in male-dominated workplaces are less likely to access professional help for mental health issues than the rest of the population. Men whose experience of being a man is shaped by masculine views like "work is the most important part of my life" were also less likely to get help.

The health sector should acknowledge the needs of separated dads, writes CEO of Parents Beyond Breakup, Pete Nicholls.

Fatherhood is one of the key life experiences that shapes men’s health. In general, being a dad is good for our health, but being a “dad in distress” can put men’s health at risk. Knowing this, I was disappointed to learn that the new National Men’s Health Strategy places so little focus on the importance of fatherhood.

Don't be fooled, loneliness affects men too

Mates are good for men's health. Having high-quality, close relationships and feeling socially connected to the people in our life, reduces the risk of poor health and increases life expectancy. The opposite is also true - lack of social connection is bad for men's health. 

That's why we refer to "social connection" as one of the key social factors that shape men's health in our Framework For A Healthier Future (A Conceptual Framework For Taking Action To Improve Men And Boys' Health).
