As the founder of the Grab Life by the Balls charity, Sam is championing change in men’s mental health. Sam established the Grab Life by the Balls charity as a means to address men’s mental health through the proactive approach of facilitating social connection and mateship thus reducing loneliness and isolation. The organisation Sam has built is based upon the foundation of laid-back informal events/meet ups to build connection and mateship in a space without judgement or expectation to change. Sam created the movement as an informal catch up in Mooloolaba approximately 3 years ago and has since grown the reach of the movement to service 11 communities across Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria and still growing. During the COVID-19 era, all of the events that Sam coordinates across Australia were suddenly stopped as a result of social distancing requirements. Many people that attend these events rely upon the occasion as one of the limited social engagements they can attend. It's groups and events like those of Grab Life by the Balls that are more essential then ever during crises such as COVID-19. With financial, work, and family stresses all significantly rising, Sam transitioned the weekly events across Australia to become virtual events on Zoom for the remainder of COVID-19. Sam now runs weekly Virtual Coffee catch-ups, regular virtual burger nights on Friday evenings, and also ran the 8 hour long Grab Life by the Balls M8 virtual event on May 8 which saw Sam interview and talk with experts and other individuals doing cool stuff in the Mens mental health space. This live Facebook event was streamed live to over 2,500 people simultaneously across Facebook and YouTube.
