The National Men’s Health Gathering is back
Put these dates in your diary if you’re passionate about improving men’s health:13-15 May 2020. That’s when we’ll be hosting the next National Men’s Health Gathering at Rydges Hotel in Melbourne and we’d love to see you there.
The National Men’s Health Gathering is the world’s longest running men’s health conference and in 2020 it will be 25 years since Melbourne played host to the first National Men’s Health Conference in 1995.
With this history in mind, the 2020 Men’s Health Gathering will be held in Melbourne under the theme “leading the world in men’s health”.
The Gathering will incorporate both the 13th National Men's Health Conference and the 10th National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Male Health Convention.
When advocating for men and boys we often focus on the many shocking statistics that remind us how much better we can do when it comes to improving men’s health. It’s also important to stop and remind ourselves that Australia’s men’s health sector has been leading the world since the 1990s.
In 1999, for example, the New South Wales government launched what is thought to have been the first men’s health policy in the world. From Movember to Men’s Sheds, many global initiatives to improve the lives and health of men and boys were created in Australia.
More broadly, the men’s health sector that the Gathering brings together has a wealth of experience and expertise in delivering male-friendly approaches to the health and social issues that affect men and boys.
The issues our diverse sector addresses include physical health, mental health, male suicide, relationship issues, social isolation, violence, boys’ transition into manhood and the challenges of fatherhood.
The 2020 Men’s Health Gathering will bring together practitioners, policymakers, academics and advocates to learn from each other as we explore our shared commitment to improve the lives and health of men and boys in Australia.
One way you can shape this conversation is by attending the 2020 Men’s Health Gathering as a speaker. If you want to be part of our 25th anniversary conversation about “leading the world in men’s health” then I encourage you to submit an abstract today and come and share your expertise with your peers in Melbourne next May.
And whether you intend to put yourself forward as a speaker or not, please put the date in your diary and do everything you can to make sure you can join us for the 25th Men’s Health Gathering anniversary next year.
The deadline for submitting an abstract is Monday 2 December 2019.
