Australia Day awards for men’s health advocates

Congratulations to men’s health charity Brave Brothers on receiving the Australia Day Community Group of the Year Award Medallion. Brave Brothers, based in Bundaberg, Qld, works across a number of areas impacting men.

They provide mentors and direct support for men’s mental health and suicide awareness, support local and national initiatives with education and direct action on prostate cancer and develop awareness on testicular cancer support through sports and male-oriented events.

“From our grassroots beginnings, we’ve worked tirelessly to raise awareness for suicide prevention and family domestic violence,” organisers said after the Australia Day recognition.

“The thousands of hours, and late nights from all of our Directors, volunteers and supporters makes it all worth it knowing that we have a made real change and saved a life.”

Brave Brothers runs a men’s walk and talk group, a motorcycle group, men’s drumming circle and “Brave Men’s Spaces,” partnering with local businesses.

“We met with these amazing businesses who wanted real change in the community believed in us and our mission in saving lives. We've trained their staff in suicide prevention and family domestic violence awareness training and provided resources for staff and customers when they need to help a mate in need.”

Australian Men’s Health Forum Vice President Rae Bonney was also awarded an Order of Australia Medal (OAM) for her work in mental health, notably with men and boys.

“Putting community at the heart of everything I do, has always felt right - being fortunate to have leaned on its life saving support during my early years,” Rae said. Rae hosts a podcast called What does it feel like being you today?’ and is a Board Member with the Global Action on Men’s Health.

She is well known for her enthusiastic advocacy in the men’s health space, where she believes that a male-friendly approach to support and resources could have a positive impact for everyone.

Congratulations to Rae and Brave Brothers!
