Australia Marks International Day of People with Disability on December 3

Australia will join the world on 3 December to recognise International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD), a United Nations observance dedicated to promoting awareness, understanding and acceptance of the 5.5 million Australians living with disability.

This year’s theme — “Fostering disability inclusive societies for advancing social progress” — calls on communities, workplaces and individuals to play an active role in creating a fairer and more accessible nation.

The latest figures highlight the scale of disability in Australia. One in five Australians live with disability, and around one in three have a severe or profound disability. Despite increased awareness, one in ten people with disability report experiencing discrimination, while more than half of all older Australians live with disability. Employment remains a key focus, with 56% of people with disability aged 15 to 64 currently employed.

IDPwD encourages Australians to get involved in a range of activities designed to build understanding and reduce barriers. People can host or attend events on 3 December, with event kits available to help communities plan and deliver meaningful activities. Organisations and individuals are also encouraged to share IDPwD messages across social media, using the campaign’s free digital resources.

This year, IDPwD is spotlighting stories of lived experience, including those of the 2025 Ambassadors, to help Australians understand the diverse realities of disability. A new Community Conversation Guide has also been released to support respectful, informed discussions about disability throughout the year.

Communities are invited to contribute by publishing articles, promoting local events, and encouraging their networks to get involved. A national community event calendar showcases activities happening across the country, from school-based initiatives and workplace events to online sessions open to all Australians.

In Australia, IDPwD is a collaborative effort involving government, schools, businesses, organisations and community groups. All share a common aim: to break down barriers and ensure people with disability can participate fully in every part of community life.

The message behind this year’s campaign is clear — everyone has a role in fostering inclusion. Whether it's organising an event, sharing a story, challenging stereotypes or learning more about accessibility, the smallest action can help shift attitudes and build a more inclusive society.
