Melbourne Shed hosts talk about men's mental health

The Monash Men's Shed in Melbourne is hosting a Men's Mental Health Forum to mark World Mental Health Day on Wednesday 10th October. The "Being A Man" forum will aim to answer the question "what does it mean to be a man in today’s world and how can we improve men’s mental health?" It will feature AMHF board member, Dr Simon Rice, as one of the guest speakers.

Simon is a Senior Research Fellow and Clinical Psychologist. He leads Orygen’s young men’s mental health research stream where he is developing new ways to engage and support young men experiencing mental ill-health.

He has broad research interests stemming from his clinical and consulting work across the youth mental health and elite sports sectors. Simon is regularly invited to speak internationally. He leads a number of international collaborative research projects and is a member of the International Olympic Committee’s Elite Athlete Mental Health Consensus Group.

Simon was awarded the Australian Psychological Society’s prestigious Early Career Research Award in 2016, and in 2015 received the Early Career Scholar Award from the Society for Mental Health Research.

He will be joined at the forum by AFL play Jake Edwards, who was diagnosed depression at 19 and has experienced suicidality and works in the mental health sector with organisations like Lifeline, Beyond Blue and the AFL Players Association

The forum will include a session on "promoting positive mental health for men".
