Men in the Hood: A Well-being Program for Men
Men in the Hood is a new WA-based initiative designed to support men's mental, emotional, and physical well-being through a series of structured group sessions and workshops.
Developed in partnership by Justin Lewis (founder of MenTALL) and Victoria Park Community Centre, the program responds to growing recognition of the pressures men face in balancing work, relationships, and personal health.
The program aims to provide a safe and supportive space where men can connect with others, develop practical life skills, and learn strategies to manage stress and improve their overall well-being.
Justin, a Men's Work Facilitator & Coach, says the initiative has three main objectives:
- To improve participants’ general well-being.
- To enhance communication and relationship skills.
- To reduce stress and increase emotional resilience.
These goals are addressed through a mix of peer-led discussions, skill-building workshops, and structured learning experiences.
Format and Structure
The program runs over eight months and includes nine sessions held at the Victoria Park Community Centre. Sessions are open to men of all ages and backgrounds. While participants are encouraged to attend all nine sessions, there is flexibility for those who prefer to attend specific sessions based on interest or availability.
The program is divided into three types of experiences:
- Life Skills Sessions: These focus on hands-on learning to develop everyday skills and build confidence in practical areas.
- Men’s Circles: Facilitated group discussions that encourage open, respectful dialogue among participants. These sessions provide space for men to share experiences and offer mutual support.
- Well-being Workshops: These interactive sessions focusing on mental, emotional, and physical self-care.
