Webinar sets out to help health professionals engage dads in the perinatal period

The School of Nursing and Midwifery Mother Infant Family Network at Western Sydney University [SoNM miFAM] is holding a webinar on 30th August called Engaging Fathers in the Perinatal Period.

As part of the two-hour webinar, from 1pm-3-pm, participants will be introduced to new video resources for Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) fathers. The series features interviews with 3 CALD dads who share their experience of the perinatal period.

The aims of the webinar are to promote an understanding of the role of fathers in pregnancy, labour, birth and the early postpartum period. Health professionals will also be given strategies to engage or include fathers as parenting partners.

Associate Professor Alka Kothari, a senior obstetrician and gynaecologist from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Queensland, will speak on the topic ‘Forgotten Fathers.’

Steven Kennedy, Founder and Executive Director of the Prepare Foundation, will cover ‘Involving First Time Fathers’ and Dr Rakime Elmir, Senior Lecturer at SoNM will report on the experiences of CALD fathers in accessing and receiving support.

Shiv, a father of three, will give his perspective of being a father and accessing support.
