In the run up to International Men's Day (IMD) the Australian Men's Health Forum has been highlighting 100+ groups around Australia doing great work to support men and boys.

The Walk ‘n’ Talk Collective is a community-based mental health charity founded in Rockhampton (QLD) by Jordan Meehan and Chris Bennett. The group aims to break down the social stigma associated with mental health, reduce isolation and provide education and awareness around men's mental health. In addition to its regular Walk 'n' Talk events, the group is expanding its reach across regional Queensland with a range of Talk 'n' Support services in both the NDIS and Child Protection Spaces.
Shed Happens was founded in 2002 by the late Ian "Watto" Watson, author of a number of books that encouraged men's self development, with great titles like: "Every Bloke's a Champion - Even You!" Ian started a monthly group at his Lutheran Church where his mates would meet up over BBQ to share stories about "what was on blokes hearts". Shed Happens distinguish themselves Men's Sheds by saying they are about "hearts not projects". There are now around 15 groups across Australia as well as regular online meet-ups.
Sheltered by Grace is a Logan-based organisation that provides support to homeless individuals over 25 years old in Brisbane. They have a particular focus on addressing the unmet needs of homeless men and say they are proud to be one of the few facilities with a dedicated program catering to both men and women escaping domestic violence. According to Sheltered by Grace, their experience over ten years of operation has shown that domestic violence against men is more common than many realise.
SMS4DeadlyDads sends info, tips and support straight to dads’ phones right across Australia. The service is for new and soon-to-be dads, helping them understand and connect with their baby and partner. It also offers professional support if needed. If men identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, they are sent a unique set of messages designed especially for First Nations dads. The service is free.
SOLiD Men is a men’s health group that meets weekly for exercise and fellowship. Workouts are free and outdoors, focusing on bodyweight movements and cardio. The sessions are led by different men and incorporate scripture. SOLiD MEN aims to promote physical, spiritual, emotional and mental health.
Sons of the West is a free 10-week health program facilitated by the AFL Western Bulldogs Community Foundation in partnership with local councils and community health services across Victoria. The aim of the program is to empower men to make their health and wellbeing a priority by giving them the tools and knowledge. Local men participate in fun, group-based exercise, with supportive exercise staff. There are 2-3 exercise groups to join based on level of intensity (low, medium and high) to ensure men with all fitness levels and abilities benefit.
Speak up Mate is a charity dedicated to empowering and supporting men's mental health in Australia. They do this through regular health promotion & community meetups, both online and face-to-face. Their governing principles centre around changing dialogue, self-expression, & building healthy support networks.
Spoke to a Bloke started when Nick Dunn took his life while going through some mental health issues. Nick had organised an annual 25km men’s mental health walk before he passed, which now continues in March each year. Walks are held in most capital cities and some regional communities. Spoke to a Bloke has expanded its fundraising to include ‘Challenge for a Bloke’.
Strong Space Counselling Established in Canberra by Principal Counsellor, Matt Musgrave, Strong Space Counselling now provides services in 7 major cities as well as offering specialist online counselling and psychotherapy for men across Australia. The team of male counsellors aim to create a safe, welcoming environment where men can embrace their full, complex selves. They say their goals is to guide the men they work with towards living with clarity, connection, and confidence, through compassionate, shame-free therapy.
SAMSN (Survivors and Mates Support Network) has been delivering free services and programs that prioritise the wellbeing of survivors, supporters and health providers since 2011. With a range of resources that can be read, watched and/or listened to as well as in person support, SAMSN is Australia’s leading organisation for male survivors of child sexual abuse.
