The Vulnerable Man exhibition challenges male stereotypes

The Starving Artist, a global initiative that uses art to spark important conversations around mental health, addiction healing tools and gender equity, is calling for contributions for a new project called The Vulnerable Man.

The virtual exhibition and publication will explore masculinity, men’s mental health, and the power of vulnerability.

The project seeks to challenge stereotypes, foster vulnerability and create a space for meaningful dialogue about what it means to live as a man today.

Artists are encouraged to explore diverse artistic mediums that can be displayed in a virtual gallery space such as paintings, drawings and illustrations, sculpture and installation, photography and digital art, mixed media and collage, performance and interactive art and video art and animation.

Each artist may submit up to 10 pieces and global submissions are welcome

The deadline for contributions is 30th January, but extensions will be considered on request. Details of the exhibition have not been released. There is no submission or participation fee.

Themes to be explored include mental health, healthy coping mechanisms, masculinity and vulnerability, activism and empowerment, and non-traditional male bodies, celebrating individuality and self-expression.

How to apply

The Starving Artist was started by Ally Zlatar to empower people through creative arts, highlighting lived experience to drive systemic reform.

The Starving Artist website also has a selection of ‘Vulnerable Man’ reflection cards specifically designed to address men’s mental health concerns. The cards were created by artist Raunak Singh and encompass a wide range of prompts and exercises as an alternative to traditional healing processes.

The cards, which are digitally accessible, cultivate creativity and introspection, “serving as an invaluable resource for artists, therapists and individuals navigating issues related to mental health.”

They cost approximately AUD$5 or US$3.64. Find out more
