2019 Men's Health Awards winners announced

During Men's Health Week, AMHF celebrated some of the very best examples of work to improve the lives and health of men and boys around Australia by announcing the winners of the 2019 Men's Health Awards. 

We visited seven cities in five days and acknowledged a record number of entries. Nominations were received across Australia for the Awards and shortlisted according to the key criteria that they provide the most impactful male-friendly service to improve the lives of men and boys. The winners, which are listed below, were decided by a combination of an AMHF panel and a public vote.

Queensland

There are a wide-range of men's organisations doing great work in Queensland.

Trademutt, a social enterprise workwear brand launched in 2018 by Daniel Allen and Edward Ross after losing a close mate to suicide, was named winner of the Queensland Men’s Health Awards on June 10. 

Trademutt aims to start conversations about mental health through the sale of colourful, attention-grabbing shirts for tradies.

Australian Capital Territory

The ACT is home to a number of organisations working to improve the lives and health of men and boys. 

Men’s Health Down Under was named winner of the ACT Men’s Health Awards in Canberra on Tuesday, 11 June. 

Men's Health Down Under is a specialist men’s health pharmacy that deals with a range of urological issues. Its main focus is supporting men who’ve had a prostatectomy, a procedure that can impact men’s physical and mental health.

Launched in 2013 by Brad Butt in Canberra, Men’s Health Down Under has 3 full-time pharmacists.

NSW

NSW has a strong history of taking action to improve men’s health. On Tuesday June 11, Mr. Perfect was named winner of the NSW Men’s Health Awards in Sydney today.

Mr. Perfect is a mental health project that’s describes itself as a grassroots, “pre-crisis” charity that encourages conversation and connection between men in a supportive and inclusive environment. It’s aim is “to create a judgment-free society for men and their mental health”

Victoria

Victoria is home to a number of leading organisations working to improve men's health. On Wednesday 12 June 2019

HALT (Hope Assistance Local Tradies) was awarded the Victoria Men’s Health Award.

HALT held its first event in Castlemaine in 2013, following the suicide of a local tradie. Its mission was to ensure every tradie in Australia knows how to look after their mental health and wellbeing. The program works by starting conversations with men in local communities about mental health and raising awareness of national support services such as Lifeline and Beyond Blue.

South Australia

South Australia is home to a number of significant men's health organisations with a long tradition of promoting men and boys' health in Australia. On Thursday 13 June 2019 the Rotary Men’s Wellness campaign won South Australia Men’s Health Awards.

The Rotary Men’s Wellness Campaign is a travelling photographic exhibition of 30 men from across Eyre Peninsula that visited 10 towns. It aimed to highlight men’s mental health, educate and inform men about resources and services available, and work at removing the stigma around talking about mental health issues.

Western Australia

Western Australia is one of only two States or Territories to have a current Men's Health Policy following successful lobbying by men's organisations in WA. 

On June 14 on the final day of AMHF Australia-wide celebration of Men's Health Award winners, The Fathering Project was named winner in WA.

The Fathering Project aims to inspire and equip fathers and father-figures to positively engage with the children in their lives – for the benefit of the kids. The Project’s core activity is helping establish Dads Groups. This is supported by weekly tips, online resources, community and school presentations and small and large-scale events.

Tasmania

Tasmania is home to Men's Resources Tasmania, one of only two state-wide bodies in Australia that connects groups and individuals focused on improving the lives and health of men boys. On Wednesday 12th June 2019 Men with Heart by Tasmen won the Tasmania Men's Health Awards.

Tasmen says it has been delivering deep and powerful men’s work, that has drawn men from across the country for over 20 years. In 2018, Tasmen created the Men With Heart exhibition, a positive portrayal of men and masculinity that uses images captured at Tasmen’s events by photographer Paul Hoelen.

Northern Territory

The NT Government is notable for setting up a Men's Health Strategy Unit in 2011 and publishing an overview of men's health in 2013. There are many men's health organisations working across the Northern Territory. In July, we'll be in Darwin to announce the winner of the NT Men's Health Awards for 2019 and publishing our report card on the State of Men's Health in the Northern Territory.
